Getting Started

Coaching is not a “one size fits all” experience. The first step is getting acquainted with the coach and making sure that the relationship is a professional and comfortable one. Assuming that both parties are comfortable – the process begins. The following steps are what could be anticipated in a coaching experience.
- Establishing what coaching is and what coaching isn’t. (i.e. not therapy)
- Creating and signing a working agreement with clear expectations for the partnership.
- Setting up a regular meeting schedule – usually 2 one hour sessions followed by weekly 30 minute meetings (can be by phone or in person)
- Self assessments to determine where you currently are (hard to start a journey without knowing where you are starting from)
- Creating a vision for what you want your life to look like (need to know where you are going!)
- Collaboration on accountability – how can the coach best support your efforts
- Agreements on benchmarks of success – (how do I know that I am making progress?)
- Assessing readiness for change
- Collaboration on a strategy – creation of an action plan
- Working through habit and environmental support (lifestyles are defined by habit)
- Working through relapse in a non-judgemental way and celebrating successful lifestyle change

“A safe and courageous space for change must be, by definition, a place where the truth can be told. It is a place where clients can tell the whole truth about what they have done (and not done) without worrying about looking good. This is an environment without judgement. And it is a place where the coach expects the truth from the client because there is no consequence of truth other than growth and learning.”
